The following is a product overview of the Heliup Near Indestructible Undercarriage. Thanks to Corrado of Heliup for sending the struts for review.
The Heliup "near indestructible" undercarriage consists of two plastic cross struts and some screws for mounting. Before we investigate the "near indestructible" claim lets take a look at some photos of the cross struts and a "squash" test :
The packet contains the two cross struts shown and some parts for mounting. In order to test this undercarriage the plan was to assemble it onto some skids and then basically abuse it with the intent to break it. The gear fits nicely on the standard Align skids and can be secured in place with a small application of CA to stop the skids from spinning round.
Having built the undercarriage I subjected it to various "squash tests", these involved either slowly or quickly pushing down on the undercarriage to simulate a very hard landing. The skids bend outwards under reasonable force but show no signs of wear and tear. Letting go the struts bounce back into shape.
Next job was to jump on it, which it also survived, my children thought this was quite fun and subjected it to some spirited "jumping on". Still no sign of damage and it still returned to it's original shape. I then subjected it to some twisting and bending in opposite directions to that of the squash testing. Once again no damage.
Beyond these tests I could have gone to the lengths of belting them with a hammer but given what they had already survived I didn't see much point in proving that I probably could break them if I was extreme enough. Iif you manage to break these in a crash you have probably totalled your entire machine....these are one tough sets of skids. More importantly they retain shape and do not stay bent after being abused. If you want to say goodbye to broken undercarriages then these struts would be a very big step towards that goal.
